'Novel Choice - our readers' picks' - ChrisL (210 posts) May 10th, 2008, 06:27 PM (0 replies)

Welcome to Novel Choice.
     This is the new section of our ELT e-Reading Group devoted to the novel – perhaps the most popular and also our most beloved literary genre.

     Four times a year one of our members will be invited to choose a novel to be read and discussed by the group. The season for this is that most of us actually choose our next books because our friends have recommended them, or at least talked about them. Besides that, we think that in doing so, we will have a greater variety of styles and periods and our members will end up reading books which otherwise they would never have contact with.

     There are a couple of things I would like to point out to,

     - unfortunately, for legal reasons our choices are limited to books that are no longer under copyright protection, which basically excludes contemporary novels. However, there are great novels that can be downloaded freely;
     - books chosen may come from English and American literatures as well as other literatures in translation into English;
     - there is no need to read the whole book before posting your comments. You can write to the forum while you are going through the text and happen to find something you consider important or interesting to share with the others;
     - if you have already read the book chosen, we would love to have your comments about the plot, the characters, etc. It would be really interesting to see your views of the novel before and after re-reading it. Just don’t tell us the ending!! :)

     I hope you enjoy our first novel and I look forward to your comments.
     Cheers - Chris
